DILWORTH SOUP KITCHEN OPENS FOOD PANTRY
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry this month launched a new initiative offering free groceries every other Wednesday to neighbors in need who have registered to address the food insecurity in their families.
Located in the lower level of the First Christian Church in Dilworth, the new Dilworth Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry is meeting a growing need among our weekly guests.
“Food insecurity is increasingly apparent on the two days every week when the Dilworth Soup Kitchen provides 200 hot, nutritious lunches as well as fresh food and groceries,” said Tom Fedell, chairman of the Dilworth Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry. “We are grateful that with our volunteers and partners we can provide a sense of hope, encouragement and especially, nourishment.”
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen, which celebrates its 15th anniversary on Christmas Eve, changed its name this summer after significantly expanding its focus to provide even more groceries and fresh food to its guests. Amazon, Food Lion, Trader Joe’s and Publix have been the primary providers of fresh food, canned goods and non-perishables for our guests.
Registered guests of the new food pantry are able to receive three days’ worth of food, selecting from a range of proteins, canned vegetables, rice, soup, pasta and sauce, as well as cereal, oat meal and breakfast foods. The food pantry also includes a refrigerator and freezer to provide guests with meats, dairy and other offerings.
The non-profit Dilworth Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry provides hot, nutritious lunches every Monday and Friday from 11 a.m. to noon for up to 200 guests from throughout Charlotte. Lunches are also delivered to nearby Charlotte Housing Authority sites and groups such as Mindful Missions.
Located at the First Christian Church, 1200 East Blvd., the Soup Kitchen has no paid staff and relies on the support of our volunteers, the community and local businesses and individuals.

2023 Annual Appeal Letter
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It is heartbreaking to think that more than 165,000 of our neighbors lack regular access to healthy food and go to bed hungry. During May 2023, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), implemented during Covid expired, thus reducing benefits to many of our guests by 33% each month which equates to $95 less per month per person. Families often must choose between paying rent or buying food.
To meet this growing food insecurity crisis, we have expanded our services to include a food pantry where our guests can select non-perishable foods and fresh groceries to help get them through the week. Dilworth Soup Kitchen is not only providing 400+ lunches weekly but our volunteers are delivering more and more lunches to those in need in senior housing apartments and CMS students through Mindful Missions. We continue to help several local Afghan and Ukrainian families who were forced to flee their countries.
This year we will provide more than 21,000 healthy lunches and distribute over 20,000 pounds of fresh groceries and 46,000 pounds of non-perishable foods. This has all been made possible by the generosity of our donors, community partners, and an all-volunteer team that keeps our operation running, week after week. The local business community has shown an interest in supporting our efforts and, as a result, we have added a Corporate Volunteer Program.
As a non-profit organization with no paid staff and no regular source of funding, we rely entirely on the support of friends and neighbors like you to meet the ever-increasing demand. Any contribution you can make will have an incredible impact as 100% of the proceeds go directly toward feeding the hungry in our community. Your tax-deductible contribution can be made online at

This Christmas Eve 2023, the Dilworth Soup Kitchen - and now Food Pantry - will celebrate its 15th year of operation. Your support has had a tremendous impact on our growth and those we serve. We thank you, sincerely, for all that you do.
Best Regards,
Tom Fedell, Board Chairman

2022 Annual Appeal
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
No one should go hungry, but the sad reality is this year more than 160,000 people in Mecklenburg County will be food insecure and over 19% of them are children. Many people were already struggling when the pandemic hit and inflation is now driving up the cost of nearly everything, especially groceries. Statistics show the cost of food at home has increased 16.7% over the prior year and we are currently experiencing the biggest food inflation since 1979. As a result, Dilworth Soup Kitchen (DSK) has seen our lines get longer and longer.
This year we will serve over 21,000 lunches. Additionally, we will distribute over 16,000 pounds of fresh groceries and 42,000 pounds of non-perishable foods. DSK has also expanded its outreach program and is hand-delivering food to those in need who cannot come to us. Strawn Apartments and Charlottetown Terrace, two low-income Charlotte Housing Authority apartments for seniors and the disabled located in the Dilworth area are a part of our outreach program as well as Mindful Missions, which delivers our lunches to impoverished CMS families in Charlotte. We are also providing food to an Afghan family of eight who settled in the Dilworth area after fleeing the Taliban.
With your past donations, we have been able to meet the increasing demand but still foresee difficult times ahead. We have been able to partner with several local businesses but have to purchase quite a bit ourselves. Like everyone else, we have seen supply and food costs increase dramatically. As a non-profit organization with no paid staff, we rely on the generosity of our friends and neighbors like you, and your support is more critical now than ever. Any contribution you can make will have an incredible impact and 100% of the proceeds go directly to feeding the hungry in our community. Your tax-deductible contribution can be made online at:

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Receives Large Grocery Donation from Amazon
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen received hundreds of items in more than 150 boxes from the Amazon warehouse in Charlotte this summer to benefit its guests.
The 25-to-40-pound boxes, which Amazon delivered, included canned goods, soups, cereals, liquids, pasta and various types of proteins. Beginning in late spring and then early summer, Amazon started providing food to the DSK that the all-volunteer non-profit picked up at the warehouse off near Charlotte Airport.
“We very much appreciate Amazon’s support of the Dilworth Soup Kitchen,” said Tom Fedell, DSK chairman. “They share our mission to address food insecurity in the Charlotte area, treating the needy and homeless with dignity and respect.”
“On every Monday and Friday, DSK provides an estimated 200 meals in Dilworth to our guests from throughout the Charlotte area,” Fedell said. “An increasingly important part of our mission is providing groceries to help our guests get through the rest of the week and weekend. We salute Amazon for sharing our commitment to meet this critical need.”
Bianca Vernali, Amazon site environmental manager, said the Amazon team is committed to supporting the communities where we live and work. “We are pleased to establish a relationship with the Dilworth Soup Kitchen and to help supply food items to assist their guests in these difficult times,” she said.
The DSK also received a generous donation of shelving units from the local Lowe’s on South Blvd. and Iverson Way for storing the more than 150 boxes of canned and pre-packaged goods. The Dilworth Soup Kitchen provides an estimated 200 nutritious lunches every Monday and Friday for guests from throughout Charlotte. Since 2008, the non-profit DSK has been offering free, wholesome meals outside the First Christian Church, 1200 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC. The DSK is just as much about fellowship, service to others – and love – as it is about the food!

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Announces Canned Food, Non-Perishable Drive
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen announced its first canned food and non-perishable drive to provide groceries for its guests on Friday morning.
The DSK provides groceries along with its 180-plus nutritious meals on Monday and Friday mornings. Breads, canned foods and non-perishables are provided on Monday thanks to Trader Joe’s, Food Lion and Publix. To meet our guests’ needs on Fridays, the DSK has been purchasing $200 to $250 work of canned goods and non-perishables from Costco.
Potential contributors to the canned food drive and non-perishables are invited to provide donations on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. of the side entrance of First Christian Church on Dilworth Road East. The DSK is encouraging churches, schools and businesses to consider food drives to provide us with canned goods and nonperishables for our guests.

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Thanks Local Groups for Helping Feed Our Guests
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen recognized several groups and organizations gave us a hand this summer by providing the lunch entrees for our guests.
“We truly appreciated the support and talents of individuals and groups in the community who gave us an occasional break in providing more than 180 lunches each week to our guests,” said Tom Fedell, board chairman. “Their menu selections and food have been fantastic; they have been true partners to our cause.”
In addition to the regular contributions from Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Church, Dilworth United Methodist Church and Mac’s Speed Shop, the DSK also received entrees or sandwiches from the QC Squad, Lasagna Love and EKAM USA. A separate group of 15 community members coordinated a “Meatloaf Challenge” to provide one of the entrees. Quail Hollow and Caroline Country Club also provided entrees. Our canned food drives were inspired by Nicole and the team at Fuel Boot Camp.
The DSK receives regular contributions each week from Trader Joe’s, Food Lion, Publix, as well as Dunkin’ Donuts and The Cheesecake Factory. The DSK is encouraging churches, schools and businesses to consider food drives to provide us with canned goods and nonperishables for our guests.

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Partners with Mac’s Speed Shop, Stew of Sustainability
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen began an exciting and productive new relationship this month with the local Mac’s Speed Shop through the efforts of the Stew of Sustainability organization.
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen received more than 200 pounds of frozen smoked pulled chicken last week from Mac’s Speed Shop on South Blvd. This will serve as the entrée for at least four separate meals during the next several weeks. Mac’s culinary team donated their time and expertise to prepare and package the chicken at their expense while DSK paid for the cost of the chicken through donations they have received.
DSK has greatly expanded its efforts during the pandemic, now serving at least 180 lunches every Monday and Friday with dozens provided to Block Love Charlotte for its work with the homeless and also for another volunteer group that distributes to Charlotte-Mecklenburg students.
“Mac’s Speed Shop is a great new partner of ours and working together is a win-win for both of us,” said Tom Fedell, Dilworth Soup Kitchen board chairman. “Our volunteer cooking team gets a little break and some exceptional support in preparing the main course. Additionally, we provide an opportunity for the employees of this quality organization to help feed hungry families and the homeless in their local communities.”
Wynn Davis, managing partner of Mac’s Speed Shop, appreciated the work of Stew of Sustainability in connecting Mac’s with the Dilworth Soup Kitchen.
“Mac’s Speed Shop is committed to being an active and contributing partner in the various communities where we live and work,” Davis said. “We’re proud to support the mission and commitment of the Dilworth Soup Kitchen, which happens to be about a mile away from our South End restaurant.”
Stew of Sustainability helps coordinate the cooking and transportation of food from local companies to area soup kitchens. It utilizes an innovative process created by Dr. Benjamin Chapman, a food safety expert at North Carolina State University, for the proper cooking, cooling, packaging and freezing of prepared foods for future use, safely and easily.
“At Stew of Sustainability, we work to make a measurable difference in the fight against hunger,” said Tom McKernan, founder of Stew of Sustainability. “By working with a range of food service providers, we help create and distribute bulk meals or stew components for soup kitchens throughout Charlotte.”

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Invites Groups to Join our Adopt a Meal Program
Many local groups and organizations such as churches and country clubs are looking for ways to volunteer and give back to the homeless and struggling families in our community during the pandemic.
The Dilworth Soup Kitchen has an opportunity for your group to work as a team to contribute to this goal, while still practicing social distancing and staying safe.
Several groups already participate in DSK’s program, including the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Carolina Golf Club, Quail Hollow Country Club, Dilworth Methodist Church, Charlotte Café, Sonny’s BBQ and Something Classic Catering, who’s partnered with DSK for their Stone Soup for Our Souls program.
DSK serves more than 300 takeout meals a week every Monday and Friday. Your group can provide DSK with cooked proteins such as meatloaf, pulled BBQ pork or chicken, baked ham, meat sauce for pasta or baked chicken tenders. One of these could be the entrée for a Monday or Friday meal.
The Adopt a Meal program gives our hardworking DSK kitchen team some greatly needed assistance and allows your group to join us in this community effort.
We need about 60 pounds of cooked protein (20 three-pound meat loaves as an example) for every lunch. It takes a coordinated group effort to supply this amount of cooked food for a meal. DSK’s volunteers prepare complementary side dishes for the prepared entree along with water, fruit, condiments and a dessert. We assemble 150 takeout containers every Monday and Friday for distribution starting at 11 a.m.
If your group would like to consider participating in the Adopt a Meal program at Dilworth Soup Kitchen, please contact Tom Fedell at info@dilworthsoupKitchen.org.

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Expands Offerings to Assist Other Organizations, Support Local Restaurants and the Community
Having expanded its homemade lunch takeout offerings to Mondays and Fridays, the Dilworth Soup Kitchen is now partnering with other community organizations and local restaurants to provide additional food several days a week for the homeless and needy. Additionally, the DSK is working to provide free lunches to Charlotte Mecklenburg students as well as to the maintenance people and health care providers at the Novant and Atrium hospitals.
“Our goal at the Dilworth Soup Kitchen is to feed the homeless and struggling families in additional ways during this pandemic,” said Tom Fedell, DSK president and board chairman. “We are also pleased to support our partnering restaurants by funding outsourced meals that help to sustain their employment and revenue base.
“Dilworth Soup Kitchen has never closed its doors in 11 years and we don’t plan to,“ Fedell added. “We continue to serve some of Charlotte’s most vulnerable amid the COVID-19 crisis. Our priority is to stay true to our mission of feeding the hungry. Due to the increasing demand, we have dramatically expanded our services.
Fedell thanked the numerous individuals and organizations that are providing support, donations and increased funding to the DSK during the pandemic. The Dilworth Community Association informed Dilworth residents in late April that it’s pledging to match up to $5,000 in contributions that are in support of the Dilworth Soup Kitchen’s efforts.
The DSK is now receiving support from the Quail Hollow and Carolina Golf Clubs. In addition to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church cooking meals one Monday a month, a few other local churches have expressed an interest in providing meals to address the increased needs.
Following are some of the expanded services being offered by the DSK as well as in conjunction with our new and continuing partners.
Broadening our services at Dilworth Soup Kitchen
We have changed our model from sit-down lunches to providing healthy takeout meals to better ensure the safety of all involved. We will return to in-house dining when it is deemed safe to do so.
Because of the tremendous increased need, we have added another day. We are now serving to go lunches every Monday and Friday.
Small bags of groceries are also being distributed to our guests as they pick up lunch. These include weekly donations from Trader Joe’s and Food Lion.
In addition to preparing lunches in our kitchen, we are purchasing lunches from local, struggling restaurants to help them generate much needed revenue during this pandemic.
We have purchased gift cards from Food Lion to distribute to our guests and other homeless groups. Food Lion has been one of our long-term partners and we felt it important to give back to them for their ongoing support.
“There are pockets of need throughout the Charlotte area,” Fedell said, “and we are privileged to be among the many committed organizations and individuals trying to fill the expanded needs within the Soup Kitchen and our partners during these trying times.”
Expanding our efforts with community partners
We have partnered with organizations that support the homeless (Watchman of the Streets & Block Love CLT). One hundred meal lunches funded by us were distributed to the homeless and prepared by local restaurants such as Sonny’s BBQ, a long-time supporter of ours.
We have also purchased a variety of canned goods to be distributed by Watchmen of the Streets directly to homeless camps.
We are purchasing proteins such as chicken and beef for meals served by the non-profit CommumityHub1245, which serve 6,000 meals a week to 300 families in North Charlotte.
We are also purchasing proteins for meals served by the non-profit Charlotte Community Kitchen, which serves 400 meals per week to the homeless and struggling families.
DSK has also distributed DSK prepared meals and outsourced restaurant meals directly to the homeless living in ‘Tent City’ in front of Urban Ministry and at The Wall in downtown Charlotte.
DSK is providing 50 meals every Friday to CMS to distribute to CMS students who don’t have transportation to CMS facilities serving lunch since schools have been closed. These lunches are distributed by CMS staff directly to the student’s homes.
DSK is providing 100 outsourced restaurant meals from Something Classic once a week during May to families in the Charlotte Housing Authority’s South Side Homes project.
DSK is funding the purchase of several restaurant meals to be distributed to the 100-plus janitorial staffs at Novant & Atrium Hospitals. These individuals are cleaning patient rooms and bathrooms and risk exposure to COVID-19 every day.
“This pandemic highlights the growing demand for the DSK’s services, expanding our mission to serve for our neighbors in good times and bad,” Fedell said. “I also want to offer the loudest of shoutouts to the many volunteers who have made the Dilworth Soup Kitchen what it is today, and what it has been able to provide day-in and day-out for more than a decade.”

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Expands Its Offerings, Now Providing Monday and Friday Takeout Lunches
Due to the spread of the coronavirus and the increase in Charlotte-area cases, the Dilworth Soup Kitchen has suspended its catered lunch service at the First Christian Church on East Blvd. until further notice.
Since March 16, 2020, the Dilworth Soup Kitchen has been offering healthy takeout lunches and related prepared food, fruits and vegetables for guests outside the First Christian Church.
Due to the increased interest in the takeout lunches and the need to provide food during a time when restaurants must remain closed, the Dilworth Soup Kitchen began offering takeout lunches on Mondays and now on Fridays at 11 a.m.
Please let your friends and anyone interested know that we have expanded our services to provide nutritious food two days a week. Thank you to our volunteers and our partners in contributing to our mission and combined success.

Dilworth Soup Kitchen Thanks Heaven for Eleven!
(The following article ran late 2019 in the Dilworth Quarterly newsletter.)
In its eleventh year of serving the community, the Dilworth Soup Kitchen has a new website, new (and continuing) local board members and an expanded focus on offering nourishment, support and encouragement to its 150 guests every week. Lunch is every Monday from 11:30 to 12:30 at the First Christian Church on East Boulevard.
The new www.dilworthsoupkitchen.org site recognizes – and hopes to build on – the efforts of local volunteers, individuals, businesses and organizations in providing fellowship and service to some of the less fortunate in the area. The site provides the opportunity to volunteer or donate to the Soup Kitchen’s cause and also recognizes partners that have been supporting the group’s mission.
The non-profit Dilworth Soup Kitchen provides hot, nutritious lunches to neighbors and guests from throughout Charlotte. An all-volunteer team prepares and serves high-quality fresh food, generously donated by our local partners – individuals, businesses and corporate donors. Guests are greeted, seated and served, restaurant style.
A few years ago, the Dilworth Community Association provided funding through its Dilworth Cares group that was greatly appreciated. The funds were used for kitchen equipment and supplies as well as for bus tickets and gift cards for Soup Kitchen guests. The DCA contribution was the last major funding gift that the Dilworth Soup Kitchen received. The board is using its new website to build awareness about the mission and activities of the Soup Kitchen.
“Our continuing fundraising efforts will allow the Dilworth Soup Kitchen to further enhance the experience of guests and volunteers through the purchase and delivery of food, supplies and equipment,” said Tom Fedell, the new board chairman. He succeeded fellow board member Mary Andujar this year. “We enjoy the quality time we have with our guests, treating them with dignity and respect. And it’s fun interacting with the quality group of volunteers who make it all happen,” Fedell added.
Board members who live in Dilworth include Anne Gildea, Gary Klasen, FCC Pastor Jolin McElroy, Marcia Rowse and Lilly Young. Also on the board are Julie Burch, Julie Bogguss, Tanarge Clegg, Nelson Haynes, Rosemary Harris, Deryl Smoak and Leslie Therrien.
The cooking team is headed by Suzanne Sigmon and Bob Beach, also of Dilworth. One week every month, the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral church cooks and delivers the hot lunch for that day. Just a few months ago, the local Food Lion on Park Road began providing food for our guests. Trader Joe’s, Panera, Dunkin Donuts and Harris Teeter have been long-time partners of the Soup Kitchen.
Additional information is on the website; questions can be directed to info@dilworthsoupkitchen.org.

Electrolux Donates Industrial Refrigerator, Freezer to Dilworth Soup Kitchen
Christmas came a few days early for the Dilworth Soup Kitchen, thanks to Electrolux. The Charlotte-based home appliance manufacturer known for its commitment to the community donated an industrial refrigerator and industrial freezer to the DSK a few days before Christmas.
“These donations from Electrolux allow the Dilworth Soup Kitchen to feed many well deserving guests each and every week,” said Mary Andujar, board chairperson of the DSK. “The generosity of Electrolux is sincerely overwhelming to us and we are so appreciative of the ongoing relationship we have had with its wonderful people over the years.”
“Not only have Electrolux employees given of their time as DSK volunteers on multiple occasions, they now have donated our third and fourth pieces of cooking equipment,” Mary added. “For this and all their community-related efforts, we are sincerely grateful.”
The first Electrolux donation was in 2017 after a group of volunteers from the company noticed that one of the DSK freezers was no longer working. “The Electrolux team immediately called and arranged for a new freezer to be donated,” Mary said. “They’ve been regular volunteers and donors ever since.”
