Dilworth Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry Rolls Out Shopping Program

CHARLOTTE … Expanding on its mission to address food insecurity in the Charlotte area, the Dilworth Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry has successfully begun a twice-monthly food pantry to provide increased support for families in need.

“Thanks to the support of the community, local organizations, grocers and our volunteers, the soup kitchen has been providing increased assistance to area families in need for the past nine months,” said Tom Fedell, chairman of the Dilworth Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry.

The DSK is currently assisting 40 registered guests representing families with more than 180 individuals. Based on the number of family members, guests can select from a range of canned and non-perishable goods. These include proteins, soup, beans, vegetables, pasta, sauces, snacks and breakfast offerings.

They also receive fresh groceries including dairy and vegetables as well as frozen proteins such as chicken breasts, ground beef, sausage and fish filets. Frozen casseroles donated by the community or made by DSK volunteers are also provided. Guests receive up to five days of groceries, leaving with two to four heavy boxes of food, each weighing up to 40 pounds.

Registered guests represent families of at least three people. They must have an actual residence, a car and a cell phone to coordinate transportation and scheduling. The program is currently limited to 40 families and there is a waiting list.

“We have been excited to introduce the pantry program in addressing the food and nutritional needs of our guests in today’s difficult economy,” Fedell said.

The non-profit Dilworth Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry provides hot, nutritious lunches and groceries every Monday and Friday from 11 a.m. to noon for up to 200 guests from throughout Charlotte. The food pantry provides fresh food and non-perishables on the first and third Wednesday of each month to registered guests.

Located at 1200 East Blvd., the Soup Kitchen has no paid staff and relies on the support of our volunteers, the community and local businesses and individuals.
